1. Using the documents in Chapter 1 as evidence, list the ways in which conditions in Germany worsened during the war.
The document by the American Ambassador to Germany shows that conditions worsened during the war because protests were against the law in Germany and the government had control to what was printed in the newspapers and what was left out. For instance the newspapers never talked about 500 women gathering near parliament to protest when they were suppressed by the police.
Also in 1939 politicians and journalists recall themselves of an event wear two communist leaders Rosa and Karl lead a communist protest and out rising which is put down by the police. Conditions worsened because people were not allowed to protest and rights were taken away from the people
Source 11.2.17 states that the war worsened conditions of the German people by stripping them of necessities such as coal, food, and electricity. As well as having the people have to search for scraps of food and over charge for little pieces of food so the poor starve. This discouraged the people of german as well as taking away all their spirits.
The last source, the source from Albin states that he was sentenced to death for starting a mutinay against the german militaristic state. this in turn causes him to lose his life because he is sentenced to death and killed for being a soldier of his own country, others were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
2. Give two reasons why the war caused such bad conditions for German civilians.
The winter of 1916-17 was an extremely bad one and the potato crops froze which meant that more people would starve as well as making the people live off a turnip diet making people very sick and mal nourished
Another reason is that the British set up a blockade of german ports and stopped the important and export of major materials in and out of the country which caused many more people to starve and be malnourished.
3. After reading Chapter 2, give two reasons why Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated on November 10, 1918.
Kaiser Wilhelm disagreed with making his state more democratic was one reason because the german people just wanted peace while Kaiser wanted to win an impossible war making him unpopular. The second reason is that soldiers and sailors held a mutiny when they refused to attack british ships and eventually the mutiny spread and all Kaiser could do was to abdicate because he no longer had any support .
4. Using the information you have read in this chapter, give evidence to support the statement that there was "revolution all over Germany."
There was revolution all over germany because the text says "led by socialists, they set up workers' and soldiers' councils to run the towns. the red flags of socialists flew over government buildings". the text also says "the country was breaking apart" from the revolution. Another example would be "there was nothing Kaiser Wilhelm could do to control his country."
5. Study the information about the German Socialists in Chapter 2, page 5. What did the three Socialist groups have in common?
All the socialist's wanted to give the people of germany democratic rights, (voting rights). Also they wanted to give workers' better working conditions.
6. In what ways were the Socialist groups different.
They were all different in the methods that they wanted to use for example the spartictus's wanted a revolution to over throw the government. while the social democratic part wanted to make reforms through the parliament and finally the independent socialists wanted to oppose the goerment and make reforms.
7. After reading Chapter 3 make a time chart of the events of the German Revolution from Nov. 10, 1918 to Jan. 15, 1919. You should be able to find six events.
1. November 10 , 1918 Kaiser flees
2. December 23, 1918 1000 malnourished take elbert hostage
3. December 1918 The sparticians hold demonstrations and 16 are killed
4. January 6 , 1919 spartiscist begin their revolution
5. January 10 , 1919 - ex-soldiers beat 2000 Spartans
6.January 15 , 1919 - Rosa and Karl captured beat and murdered
8. At what time would you say the Communists had their best chance of seizing power? Explain your answer.
I would say the communists had their best chance at seizing power right when Wilhelm left the country because they were already in control of everything and had already created a small government but they took to much time and ex-soldiers and parliament put down the riots eventually and there chance to take over was lost .
